മൂത്രത്തിലെ പഞ്ചസാരയുടെ അളവ് പല ഘടകങ്ങളാൽ നിയന്ത്രിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പ്രമേഹം ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരാൾക്ക് മൂത്രത്തിൽ പഞ്ചസാരയുടെ അളവ് കൂടി നിൽക്കുമ്പോഴും രക്തത്തിൽ അത് സാധാരണ നിലയിലാകാം. മറിച്ച് രക്തഗ്ലൂക്കോസ് ഉയർന്ന് നിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ മൂത്രത്തിലെ പഞ്ചസാരയുടെ അളവ് കുറഞ്ഞും നിൽക്കാം. അതുകൊണ്ട് മൂത്രത്തിലെ ഗ്ലൂക്കോസിന്റെ അളവനുസരിച്ച് ചികിത്സയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റം വരുത്തുന്ന രീതി വിശ്വാസ്യമല്ല.
